Turning a smart TV into a professional menu display has become simple and inexpensive. This article explains which TV to choose, how to orient it (landscape vs portrait), how to set it up, and how much to invest in total for a complete setup.

In short

  • Any smart TV with a native web browser (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Android TV) works perfectly.
  • 32-43" for the counter and window, 50-55" for the dining room, 65-75" for entrances and large rooms.
  • Crubby supports horizontal, vertical, and TVs physically rotated 90°.
  • Complete setup in 1 hour, hardware €250-450, no enterprise signage subscription.

Which smart TV

TVs with a native web browser (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS post 2018, Android TV) are ideal. Open the browser, go to app.crubby.com/screen/<tuo-slug>, and the menu starts.

Alternatively, a Fire TV Stick (€40) or a Chromecast on an even older TV work just as well.

  • 32-43" for the bar counter / window (close-up).
  • 50-55" for a dining room with tables 3-4 metres away.
  • 65-75" for an entrance or large rooms.

Position matters more

More important than the diagonal: position, height, and viewing angle. A well-placed 43" beats a poorly mounted 65".

Horizontal or vertical

Crubby supports both orientations automatically. Choose based on where you mount the TV:

  • Horizontal (landscape) is the standard: it shows a compact menu and supports photos plus text.
  • Vertical (portrait) is better for the bar counter and window: it mimics a vertical card, great for a cocktail list or gelato.

TVs physically rotated 90°

Special case: some restaurateurs buy landscape TVs and physically mount them in portrait (at 90°).

Works rotated too

Crubby handles this case with CSS rotation: the menu appears upright to the customer even if the TV is physically turned.

Typical setup

  1. 01

Buy the TV and the mount

    TV €200-400 plus mount €20-50.

  4. 04

    Open the browser and navigate

    Go to app.crubby.com/screen/<tuo-slug>.
  5. 05

Set it as the start page

The menu lives on; it restarts on its own when powered up.

Total: 1 hour of setup, hardware cost €250-450.

What you do NOT need

  • No proprietary hardware.
  • No dedicated set-top box.
  • No Samsung/LG subscription for enterprise digital signage.

Crubby runs on a standard browser: no hidden costs and no platform lock-in.

Do I need to buy a special TV for digital signage?
No. Any smart TV with a native web browser works (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS post 2018, Android TV). If your TV is older, a Fire TV Stick for around €40 or a Chromecast is enough.
Can I mount the TV vertically?
Yes. Crubby supports both horizontal and vertical automatically, and it's perfect for the bar counter and window or for a cocktail list. We also handle landscape TVs physically turned 90° via CSS rotation: the menu still appears upright.
How much does a complete setup cost in total?
Between €250 and €450 of hardware (TV €200-400 plus mount €20-50), with about an hour of installation. The menu design is included in the Crubby plan.
Which TV diagonal do I need?
32-43" for a counter or window viewed up close, 50-55" for dining rooms with tables 3-4 metres away, 65-75" for entrances and large rooms. Remember, though, that position, height, and viewing angle matter more than the diagonal.
Do I have to pay a Samsung or LG subscription for signage?
No. Crubby runs on the TV's standard browser: no proprietary hardware, no dedicated set-top box, and no enterprise digital signage subscription.
